When he retired in 2005, Bruce Gray committed to walking by faith and not getting ahead of God. One of the doors God has opened for Bruce on his journey has allowed him to become a part of FCA’s new ministry in Canada.
He became aware of FCA’s ministry to coaches in summer 2015 when he helped coordinate a mission project for an FCA New Hampshire soccer camp to partner with the More Than Gold during Canada’s Pan Am Games. Bruce facilitated connections for FCA with Bethany Community Church in St. Catharines.
When he learned about FCA’s model of ministering to coaches Bruce saw that it could fill a huge need in Canada. “I knew a coaches’ ministry like FCA would be a great complement to other like ministries. FCA’s desire to disciple and to utilize the coach to work with and through the athlete is a perfect fit for what we need in Canada,” Gray said.
During his business career, Bruce’s was a Rail and Truck Transportation Specialist in the oil industry, first with British Petroleum and then thirty years with Imperial Oil, He now serves as a board member with the Eagles Nest Association of Waterdown/Drummond House, a transitional home for women and children in times of crisis.
A resident of Brantford, ON, Bruce and his wife Edie have four grown children and nine grandchildren. The couple attend the local Salvation Army church.
Ken Hastie picked up a lacrosse stick at age 3 and has never put it down. He played Ontario minor league box lacrosse until he was twenty when he began coaching it. Hastie has played with 2 Provincial Championship teams and was a member of the coaching staff of 3 Provincial Championship teams. In his 25 years of coaching he has coached athletes who have never picked up a stick, to athletes who are now playing College and or Professional lacrosse.
Ken has been interested in having FCA come to Canada for many years after reading their online coaching materials and his son’s experience playing with FCA in a Lake Placid tournament. During a dinner conversation with Dan Britton, FCA’s Executive VP of International Ministries, at a 2011 Under Armour All-American tournament in Baltimore Hastie recalls saying: “We really should look at getting FCA into Canada for lacrosse.” Now, eight years later, it has become a reality.
“I am excited about how FCA’s ministry can impact coaches and fill them with a desire to coach differently as it did for me. And, how it helps kids find Christ and let them know that they can play sport and have real purpose in doing it — besides just winning.”
“When I came to Christ in 2007 I had been coaching a long time and my focus was on winning and striving for excellence. While those elements are great, I know now that they aren’t the end all. My focus has shifted to being centered more on the kids than the actual sport itself. I realized I should have been doing things a lot differently, and FCA had the groundwork for how to do that,” Ken said.
A 1987 graduate of Centre Wellington High School, Hastie attended Heritage College and Seminary where he studied music education. He is a Home Comfort Advisor with Reliance Home Comfort Solutions and Network Marketing.
Ken and his wife Sandy reside in the village of Innerkip an hour west of Toronto. They attend River City Church, Cambridge, where Ken has been an active part of their worship ministry for years. The couple has four children — Brianna, MacKenzie, Joel and Logan.
Bio on Ricky here.
I was first introduced to FCA, through a team from New Hampshire, who came to our area and partnered with us in the running of a soccer camp. So when I was approached about helping to bring this terrific organization to Canada, I was all for it.
I am a local business owner, and also the Sports Director at Bethany Community Church in St. Catharines, ON where I oversee both youth and adult programs.
I am the very fortunate husband of a beautiful wife Jayne and the proud father of 4 adults who have also brought 3 spouses into our family.
